Keeping Your Horse Bug Free with the Best Fly Sheet for You
By Kelly Sheehan
Even though we all love it, warmer weather means increased bugs. More than just an irritation, flies can deposit bacteria, parasites, and larvae on a horse, as well as cause open sores. Additionally, horseflies can transfer additional diseases such as Equine Infectious Anemia. While there are many levels of fly control, using a fly sheet can significantly reduce the amount of flies and bugs biting at your horse.
Choosing a fly sheet can be a complicated task. Finding a sheet with enough durability to last more than a season or two, while light weight enough to stay cool and comfortable is a delicate balance. Add to that a sensitive-skinned horse and staying bug free is a challenge for even the most professional groom. Horse Tack Co.has a great selection of fly sheets that can help keep your horse as comfortable and healthy possible. Generally, two main types of fly sheets exist– PVC-coated nylon and polyester woven mesh. PVC-coated nylon sheets tend to last longer, but also take longer to break in and may be more prone to shoulder rubs. Ideally, sheets with this material will include some lining in the shoulder area. Also, horses should be monitored for temperature as a heavier sheet with lining can trap heat. The other option, polyester woven mesh, is more flexible but also may rip or snag with turnout. Polyester mesh sheets tend to be more comfortable at warmer temperatures.
