When in Doubt, Vet Wrap it Up

By Jaclyn Amaru

I recently heard someone mention they were using vet wrap for something totally outside the normal first aid uses and I have to admit I was really taken aback at how great an idea it was. So I started asking around: what was the craziest thing you’ve ever used vet wrap for? And let me tell you, the answers were savage! So here is your viral list of all the reasons why vet wrap should be not only in your first aid kit, but also in your purse, back pocket, glove compartment, bedside drawer, tack room, show bag…(do I need to go on?). Accessorize- One of the first responses I got about how people were using it was for hair ties and headbands. Some even have been creative enough as to make a belt with it. So whether keeping fly aways tame at the gym or needing a quick fix for a broken rubber band or belt, vet wrap has you covered.

Support- Ladies, Ladies. It seems as though if you need some help slipping into that show shirt or even some support in a strapless dress, vet wrap can hold those boobies in for you. And believe it or not, this comes from our full-chested equestrians, so go ahead and give it a try. Word is, it cuts down on bouncing. And another tip for bra malfunctions- when your underwire starts to poke out, guess what you can use to cover the hole?

Decorating – With the wide variety of colors and designs that vet wrap comes in, I’ve seen people get very creative. From decorating their horse by wrapping it or draping it like a streamer, to holiday decorating of stalls, to planning a party at home and yes, even scrapbook designs, vet wrap is a one-stop shop. Heck, you could even wrap your gifts with it for some challenging fun!

Pad Any Surface- Really, any surface! Any surface that experiences a lot of friction to help add a layer of comfort. Some places people have padded include the armpit piece of a crutch, a wheel barrel’s handles, a car steering wheel, pens/pencils and bucket handles.

Koozies- Wrap up cans and baby bottles, c’mon, everyone’s doing it.

After-hours fun- Yes ladies and gents, our extra creative equestrians have even found a way to use it in a let’s say a 50 Shades of Grey way. The plus, it supposedly doesn’t rip hair off or leave marks. The drawback, you may need a safe word. #yourwelcome

Hold things together- Need to stack some containers or even keep rolled-up sleeping bags nice and tight? How about keep your luggage tight next time you travel?

Repair/Replacement- It can be used in a number of ways to repair things or even replace items commonly used. For example, one rider told me she sometimes uses vet wrap in place of half chaps when schooling. In terms of repair, the funniest thing I had to have heard was from someone who told me that she used it to repair the bumper on her truck and it worked so good, she still hadn’t fixed it! Another person told me they used it on their muffler. Other places it could be used in repair include fencing, stirrup pads or boots (definitely make sure you have some black on hand.)

The New Thunder-Vest- If your pup is anything like mine, loud noises like thunder and fireworks are his worst enemy. Create a DIY thunder vest with vet wrap as an anti-anxiety solution. Other uses for your furry friend include padding collars or harnesses, especially if they are a little big to help size down.

Non-slip surfaces- Whether you need a drink coaster, something flat to line your cabinets with or a gripping surface with high foot traffic, lay down some vet wrap to prevent unwanted movement.

So with the holidays approaching, stuff a stocking, give it in a gift swap or just load up on your stock of vet wrap because I’m not sure anyone should be leaving home without it.
